My name is Cristian Chirila. I was born and raised in Romania and in 2010 I moved to the United States to attend the University Of Texas At Dallas on a full ride Chess Scholarship. After graduating in 2014, I spent the next four years traveling and competing at the highest level. During these years I also continued honing my coaching skills, holding the position of Head Coach of Bay Area Chess’ Elite team.

Alternatively, during this time I also started pursuing other endeavors, including chess journalism and commentary. You may have seen some of my articles in various publications including US Chess or recognize me from the commentary team during the Saint Louis Chess Club broadcasts.

In late 2017 I started working as a coach for the soon to be World Championship Challenger and highest rated American player, Fabiano Caruana. Although Fabiano wasn’t able to come out victorious in the match, he was able to cement his status as the 2nd best player on the planet, as well as the biggest threat to Magnus Carlsen in the years to come.

In early 2019 I moved to Columbia, Missouri, where I accepted the Head Coaching position for the University of Missouri (Mizzou) Chess Team. In the first year we were able to recruit three Grandmasters and a Women’s Grandmaster, and I am confident that the Tigers will bring home future titles as we compete in national and international competitions.
